Good Reading : December 2012 - January 2013

my say I’ve been thinking lately about writing awards. There are quite a few book-related awards out there for women writers – the Orange Prize, the Kibble Awards, the Stella Prize. But why don’t we also have awards just for men? Don’t get me wrong: I think having some awards only for women is great. Once upon a time women had to write under a male name to be recognised. Discrimination against women writers, or just women in general (I am so appalled that my mother had to resign from teaching just because she got married) was rife. And in some areas of our society it still is, to a certain extent. These awards were and probably still are important. But now women writers as a group are highly skilled, articulate and talented people who have not only reached the highest pinnacles in writing, but are also really popular with readers. Look at Hilary Mantel, Margaret Atwood, and our own Anna Funder and Kate Morton. There are hundreds of great women writers who have penned successful thrillers, literary reads and some of the most fantastic kids’ books and especially young adult novels. The list of successful women authors is very long. But where are the awards for male writers? The guys are out there producing great books too. There are a number of awards in which gender is irrelevant, such as the Man Booker and the Miles Franklin Award. There are awards for emerging writers, unpublished writers, writers of kids’ books, crime fiction, romance, and awards to recognise lifelong writing achievements. But none just for men. Why hasn’t this been raised by male authors? Maybe we should start one. I wonder what we’d call it? This is the last issue of the year for us, and what a year it’s been. The book world has been turned on its head and that is a scary thing for those of us inside the bubble. But it’s also really exciting to think what next year might bring. The challenges of the digital world will keep advancing. That is a given. And you will find us evolving to meet book readers head-on out there in cyberspace next year. We have exciting plans afoot. We are beginning with a revamped gr available for sale on the Apple iBookstore. Is print dead? Not yet, and I suspect that it will never die. There’ll just be less of it. You can be assured that we will always have the print issue of gr for you, no matter where the world of technology takes us. I would like to thank all of you for your generous support of gr, for your letters, your feedback, your reviews, the many chats on the phone and via email, the comments on Facebook and our blog, as well as for just enjoying the magazine and sharing our love of reading and books. I wish you all a safe and merry Christmas. And a high five for a happy new year from Baxter, work/life balance supervisor (and recently promoted to include head of security) here in the gr office. He has recently been mastering the art of lying on his back with his legs straight in the air – as his contribution to the ‘life’ part of the work/life balance equation. I’m not sure we will join him with that one. Here’s to books under the Christmas tree. And Baxter, superdog, poised and ready to pounce on Santa.
