www.goodreadingmagazine.com good reading august 2012 20 Inara Litte, Volunteer What are you reading now? The Rescue by Nicholas Sparks. What’s it about? It’s about life, love, courage, hope and new beginnings. Would you recommend it? It’s by the author of The Notebook, and although perhaps not quite as good, it’s nevertheless an easy and enjoyable read. What other books are on your reading list for the MS Readathon? Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson. I also plan to revisit some of my old friends – Jack London, Victor Hugo, Wilkie Collins, Émile Zola ... readers’ life 1 August 2012 main caught reading we asked some of the staff at ms australia what they’ll be reading for the ms readathon this year. Leanne Westell, Marketing Manager, Fundraising What are you reading now? Little Bee by Chris Cleave. What’s it about? The novel tells the story of Sarah, a white British magazine editor and Little Bee, a Nigerian refugee, who meet unexpectedly and are reunited several years later in London. The story is told from the alternating points of view of these two women who are from dramatically different worlds. It unfolds the events leading up to and following that fateful encounter, and the unlikely friendship that develops between them. It’s a story about identity and meaning, love and hope, loss and friendship. Would you recommend it? Yes! The story is fascinating, the characters are interesting and Cleave’s use of language is inspired. What other books are on your reading list for the MS Readathon? Freedom by Jonathan Franzen and The Chemistry of Tears by Peter Carey. Emma Bennett, National Social Media Marketing Coordinator What are you reading now? A Game of Thrones by George R R Martin. What’s it about? Set in a medieval fantasy world made up of seven kingdoms, this massive tale explores politics, battles, loyalty, lust, dragons, morality, impending winters and the quest for power. Would you recommend it? It’s hefty reading, but I would recommend it. Don’t be put off by the fantasy label; it’s packed full of wit, suspense and adventure. And if you were hooked on the TV series you won’t be disappointed. What other books are on your reading list for the MS Readathon? Travels with My Aunt by Graham Greene, A Clash of Kings by George R R Martin, The Eye in the Door by Pat Barker, The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year by Sue Townsend, Marzipan and Magnolias by Elizabeth Lancaster. Gill DeCis, Fundraising Manager – MS Australia ACT/NSW/VIC What are you reading now? Kinglake-350 by Adrian Hyland. What’s it about? It’s about the events that took place on 7 February 2009 – the day of the worse bushfire in Australian history, Black Saturday. Sergeant Roger Wood was the only officer on duty on that fateful day in the small community of Kinglake. He attended numerous incidents and led a group of 50 people from a store and through burning bush to safety four kilometres away. Black Saturday was a many-headed monster in whose wake stories of grief, heroism and desolation erupted all over the state of Victoria. This book is about the heroism of those who confronted it. Would you recommend it? Absolutely. Although excruciatingly sad and unbelievably confronting, this book tells the story of a slice of Australian history that will always be hard to come to terms with. For the last 33 years the MS Readathon has been raising money to help people living with multiple sclerosis (MS). For one month each year, school children read as many books as they can and ask friends and family to sponsor them, knowing that the money they raise will help make a difference in the lives of the 21 000 Australians who live with MS. But now it’s not just school kids who can participate: in 2012 the MS Readathon is open to everyone, which means anyone of any age can read, have fun and help raise funds for a great cause. The MS Readathon is taking place this year in August, so if you want to take part and haven’t already done so, there’s still time. Go to msreadathon.org.au to register and get for more information.
