34 goodreading Sir Walter Scott’s passion for Scotland and its history is reflected in his many novels. We visit his home in his beloved Border Country where he wrote the majority of his works. Sir Walter Scott was bor n on 15 August, 1771 at his father’s house in Edinburgh, the younger son of thirteen children, the first six of whom died in infancy.Very early in his life he became ill, contracting polio which was to leave him lame for the remainder of his life. He spent the majority of his youth living with his parents attending uni- versity in Edinburgh where he studied law, later becoming a barrister. In 1797 he married Margaret Charpentier of Lyons, France, with whom he had five children, the first of whom died in infancy.The couple lived partly in Edinburgh and partly at Lasswade Cottage, about seven miles southeast of Edinburgh. greatscot!
