The two volume set of Thomas Pakenham’s Meetings with Remarkable Trees and Remarkable Trees of the World. Published by Weidenfeld & Nicholson, rrp $69.95. These giant sequolias in the Sequolia National Park, California, are called the ‘House of Representatives’, named so by a group of politicians over a century ago. The author stands dwarfed by these awe inspiring titans of the forest which measure 40 to 50 feet in girth and soar 200 feet towards the heavens. Down on the ground, these enormous trunks provide a place of sanctuary and repose.
