This comment was recently given a whole new meaning for our family. We were on a family picnic at a local river, which was swollen by floodwater but deemed safe for the children to swim and play in. My four children crossed the river at a shallow place and were playing happily when I called to them to come back over. They obviously tried to retur n to my side of the river at a different point because it got much deeper. My 12-year- old daughter picked up her 4-year-old brother to carry him across and a few footsteps later she stepped into a hole. The river then car ried her and my son about 30 metres downstream. She was wonderful and brave and didn't panic -- just held her brother above the water and let the river take her until she could reach a safe spot. It was incredibly har rowing and a true near-death experience for her. After everyone was safe and we had all hugged and shed tears I asked her what she was thinking while it was unfolding. She answered, 'It happened so quickly that all I remember thinking was, "I can't drown. I haven't yet finished my book!" ' That's what I call living to read. Michaela Owen,Yass NSW Dear Good Reading I love to read books by Paul Jennings because they're short and funny and it can't get much better than that. I also love to read fantasy books like the book I'm reading now, called Museum of Thieves (from 'The Keepers' series). Katey, aged 11, Maryborough, Qld Hi Rowena As a new reader (some 12 months or so) of gr, I thought I just had to write to congratulate and thank you for such a fabulous magazine. I picked up a copy in the library one day last year and was immediately and absolutely rapt in Good Reading. I can't get enough of it! I just adore books and this makes the process of choosing what to read next so much easier. It is always exciting and fills me with such anticipation and some sense of frustration about what to read first and the fact that I can only read one book at a time. I hope that despite all this technology that the printed word in its cur rent for m never goes away. I can't ever imagine achieving with an e-reader the level of comfort that I feel when curling up with a good book. I look forward to continuing to have my monthly fix and for this I thank you graciously. Julie Rodgie, Berkeley Vale NSW Note from Ed: You might remember a dog named Mick, who made an appearance on this page in the February issue.Well, his owners now have a new puppy. His name is Bran. The photo they sent us was so terrific we couldn't resist sharing it with you. It shows the pure joy of life.
