Norman Vaughan starts up the southwest ridge of Mount Vaughan in Antarctica carrying Zippy, a stuffed dog that represents canine contributions to Antarctic exploration. Vaughan was one of the first Americans to mush on the continent, in 1929. He was the first to reach the summit of Mount Vaughan, named after him by Richard Byrd. He reached it on his 89th birthday. An expedition to Great Sail Peak, Baffin Island, Canada, 1998: the expedition’s hanging camp, about 365 metres above the big ledge below. An overhang protects the portaledges from falling rock and ice. The tents, writes Wiltsie, are ‘astonishingly snug and safe.’ We think we’ll take his word for it!
