Good Reading : April 2006
A unique book clubbers’ holiday Andrea Stretton, one of Australia’s best known literary journalists, will be leading a unique book clubbers’ holiday course in Fiji in May. She’s chosen five texts under the umbrella of Contemporary Australian Fiction. Andrea’s deep knowledge of literature, easy discursive style and ability to include everyone produce highly enjoyable and stimulating groups. During daily discussions, Andrea will guide, give background to each text and author, and throw in her own insights. The list of authors includes David Malouf, Kate Grenville, Tim Winton and Dorothy Porter – and J.M. Coetzee’s novel Elizabeth Costello. This year’s Commonwealth Book Prize judges didn’t regard it as Australian, but Andrea has included it. “I felt that as Coetzee currently lives in Australia, and the main character is Australian, it could appro- priately be included on this occasion. In any event, that intriguing issue, along with the novel itself, makes for terrific discussion.” Andrea admits to a degree of anguish in making the choices. “Of course there are glaring omissions – Peter Carey, Elliot Perlman, Eva Sallis – plenty of wonderful writers. But we’ll explore excerpts from other writers as well, and I feel confident that the ones we’ve chosen will produce some fascinating discussion and make for a very rewarding week.” For more details, email firstname.lastname@example.org - see ad on opposite page. “... a compelling read that breaks news and examines writers’ issues.” SMH “I love Australian Author for the news and information, for the gossip ... I love it for the way it helps reduce the sense of isolation inherent in the writing life.” John Marsden Only $26.40 per year Society of Editors (NSW) Inc. Do you need a professional editor?
