word spoken. Try it for yourself if you haven’t done so already. Read a poem silently, then try reading it out aloud. See how much easier it is to read when being spoken? Suddenly you just might find that you understand and appreciate the poem so much better as you continue to read it aloud. Why not try it with the poem that you’ll find on page 24? Try reading it aloud a few times. I found the second or third time I discovered new things about this poem. It does open your eyes to the poet’s meaning and the sheer cleverness of just a few words. Poetry seems to have a growing market with a younger audience. Poetry slams are popular in schools and writers’ festivals. There are some really terrific young performance poets. You only have to Google ‘best perfor mance poets’ to find some fabulous videos of poets who are simply arresting to watch. These performances bear out my mother’s words perfectly. So here’s to poetry. And to the Welsh, of course, and their most famous son, Dylan Thomas, whose work still resides upon so many shelves. And to my mother, whose love affair with Dylan Thomas has never waned. Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And Baxter, who’s looking forward to his Christmas stocking. It always smells so good.
