If your letter is published this month you will win a copy of Raise Your Voice by Richard Lawton, valued at $29.99. Have you ever wanted to join a choir but were afraid you couldn’t carry a tune? Do you ever have to present at work but feel you can’t convey your messages effectively because of your voice? Do you struggle to sound confident at meetings or on the phone? Do you dislike the sound of your own voice? You are not alone! Not only is your voice a vital part of your personality, but it also has more to do with your mental and physical health than you realise. Raise Your Voice is written by one of Australia’s most experienced voice coaches and is full of practical tools If your letter is published in the December issue of gr, you will win a copy of Under the Cold Bright Lights by Garry Disher, valued at $29.99. The young detectives call Alan Auhl a retread, but that doesn’t faze him. He does things his own way — and gets results. He still lives with his ex-wife, off and on, in a big house full of random boarders and hard-luck stories. And he’s still a cop, even though he retired from Homicide some years ago. He works cold cases now. Like the death of John Elphick — his daughter’s still convinced he was murdered, the coroner not so sure. Or the skeleton that’s just been found under a concrete slab. Or the doctor who killed two wives and a girlfriend and left no evidence at all. Auhl will stick with these cases until justice is done. One way or another. Hi Rowena I can’t remember when I first starting dreaming about having my own library, but my dream has finally come true. It was four years in the making, including over a year to find the perfect reading chair. My books are all shelved, and the mementos and knick-knacks are spread around, there’s a special shelf for my book journals (I keep journals listing all the books I have read), my collections of bookmarks and bookplates have their own place and, finally, all my copies of gr have come out of their wrapping and have shelves of their own. Carolyn Ward, Gympie Qld Dear Rowena There is nothing I enjoy more than sitting out in the winter sun, listening to the birds sing. The chatter of magpies, the cawing of crows, the chattering of willy wagtails. With a hot cuppa next to me and a favourite book to immerse myself in, this is heaven. No interruptions to spoil this pleasure. Books are like comfort food, I re-read my all-time favour ites. Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier, Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy,Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, and Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. I remember the latter was the first picture book our English Literature teacher read to the class. I would wait in anticipation to see what happens next to Pip. A feel-good book and movie is Chocolat by Joanne Harris. Then there are the children’s books I loved: Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, Peter Pan by JM Barry and Heidi by Johanna Spyri.
