Good Reading : April 2017
GOOD READING APRIL 2017 9 (gr October 2016). A few years ago I travelled up the River Dart, and gazed at Greenway, the white house on the hill, and imagined Agatha Christie sitting somewhere in the shade with one of her many notebooks, planning and sketching a scene for one of her famous murders. WhenIwasa girl, my father always packed a box of Agatha Christie books to take on our family beach holidays. This was in Queensland, and back then it could rain for several days, so Agatha Christie provided many hours of absorbing indoor entertainment that usually involved lively whodunnit discussions while searching for cleverly planted clues. When my father passed away I found some of those well-worn old books in his library and the memories came flooding back. These days I continue the family passion and am delighted to have several books offer ing their own clues into the life of this brilliant cr ime writer. And for like-minded Christie fans I highly recommend Agatha Christie A to Z:The essential reference to her life and writings by Dawn B Sova, The Grand Tour: Letters and photographs from the British Empire expedition edited by Mathew Prichard (the grandson of Agatha Christie), and Agatha Christie’s Complete Secret Notebooks: Stories and secrets of murder in the making, a must for avid fans. This last book is a treasure trove of the author’s simple pencil drawings, plot notes, book titles and character descriptions. I often refer to it while watching television adaptations of her stories. So whether I’m at the beach or somewhere else, or if it’s raining or not, Agatha Christie is still the Queen of Crime in my library. Many thanks for this fascinating article. And now it seems On the Blue Train is beckoning.
