Good Reading : March 2017
GOOD READING MARCH 2017 9 Dear Rowena I was interested in ‘Why We Should All Read Donna Tartt’s The Secret History’(gr October 16 issue). Twenty-five years ago I gave my copy to a non-reading friend, and she was transformed by the book. She became an enthusiastic reader, demanded more ‘good books’ and found she loved reading – and still does. The Secret History changed her life. That’s a feel-good memory for me as well! Margaret,Toolangi Vic Dear gr A recent article linking grandmothers with their non-communicative grandsons via books sparked my interest. I have been trying to inspire my granddaughter to read books, so I began my search of young fiction. Charlie and the War against the Grannies by Alan Brough caught my eye and started us off. I read the books first then pass them on. A light text about dastardly plots combined with humorous pictures quickly attracts attention and engages the imagination. Jane was found chuckling and darting back to read, much to her parents’ amazement. David Walliams’s Gangsta Granny, with its laugh-out-loud illustrations (the best was Granny practising yoga in her underwear) came next. Oh, the joy of old age lived with courage! I’m told by booksellers that young adult fiction is really taking off. Watch out, because younger fiction, which is great fun, is close behind. If you haven’t tried Alan Brough or David Walliams, then do yourself a favour and give them a go. Sadly, Richard Roxburgh’s Artie and the Grime Wave left me cold, but that was an exception.
