Good Reading : February 2017
GOOD READING FEBRUARY 2017 9 Chesil Beach might require the star limit to burst through the current ceiling of five. Bob Moore, Cumbalum NSW Dear Rowena As soon as I have finished reading the latest issue of gr I go online and put new books on hold at my local library or add new titles to my birthday or Christmas list. In the Feb 2016 issue, I was interested to read the article about some of the world’s most intriguing bookshops. As we were heading overseas a few months later, on an itinerary that included Venice, I was determined to find the Liber ia Acqua Alta in Venice. We always like to do things away from the swarm of tourists, so we headed off to find this little gem. Ar med with the address (which usually doesn’t help much in Venice), my husband led me to this bookshop. It was the most amazing, quirky, unique bookshop I have ever had the pleasure to step into. Books are stacked everywhere – inside gondolas, boats and bathtubs. The water theme is carried on throughout the shop with oars, paddles, flippers and lifebuoys strategically placed. Luigi, the owner, welcomes everyone with a smile and encourages all to check out every little nook and cranny. His sense of humour abounds – the fire escape is through an open doorway going directly into a canal. We didn’t buy a book, but we did buy a 2017 calendar featuring all the areas inside and outside the shop. It also shows the shop flooded, and Luigi in rubber boots and the gondolas – floating! It was an hour or so well spent. I encourage anyone going to Venice and wanting something a little different to check it out. Having just read the November issue I noticed that the world’s oldest library in Fez, Morocco has been restored. What a pity I didn’t know of its existence when we were in Fez a few years back. I guess you can’t win them all!
