GOODREADINGMAGAZINE.COM.AU GOOD READING DECEMBER 2016 48 COFFEE TABLE THE IMAGE CONJUROR Now in his 80s,Victor ian illustrator Robert Ingpen has been creating art for more than half a century. A recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen Award, Ingpen creates worlds out of paints and pencils that draw you into their imaginative vortex. His illustrations for Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales capture the impish glint in the eye of the Friar, and in his drawings for Hamlet he has created a dazzling close-up of the guilt-stricken face of the fleeing Claudius when confronted with a theatrical re-enactment of the murder he committed. He has also evoked the topsy-turvy world of Alice in Wonderland and the cosy, softly lit home of Mr Badger in The Wind in the Willows. Robert Ingpen is truly a giant among illustrators. Wonderlands: The illustration art of Robert Ingpen is published by NewSouth Books, rrp $34.99. Advice from a Caterpillar from Lewis Carroll’s Alice through the Looking-Glass. Come Away, Come Away! from J M Barrie’s Peter Pan. The Dreamkeeper from Robert Ingpen’s The Dreamkeeper.
