Good Reading : December 2016 - January 2017
GOOD READING DECEMBER 2016 / JANUARY 2017 9 inscr iptions and unknown names. At the time I did not have the words to convey this, only the awe which has never left me. I am delighted to read in the September 2016 issue that Cath Crowley’s latest novel is a kind of love letter to the book. Rare book dealers use the word ‘provenance’ to indicate previous ownership, but it takes a creative writer to approach the possession that, equally, books have over us. I am looking forward to reading Words in Deep Blue. Judith Crabb, Oaklands Park SA Dear Rowena, Like Cath Crowley (gr September 2016), I love secondhand bookshops – or any charity shop well stocked with books. They’re an Aladdin’s cave for many of the bookwor m treasures I’ve discovered over the years. But it’s not just the stor ies between the covers that lure me. It’s also wondering about a book’s previous life: who were the other readers who might have turned pages late into the night? Was the book a gift? (Inscriptions are always helpful.) Did the previous owner enjoy reading it? And I live in hope that one day I’ll find a handwr itten note or letter tucked inside one of my treasures; the best I’ve found to date is a bus ticket. And when I drift into the children’s section, where the shelves are packed with old and much-loved books, there’s a special contentment to be found in remembering nights tucked up in bed with my beloved Nana, and a bedtime storybook. Nana had only a few books, so I heard the same stories many times over. But I never tired of hear ing them. Stories about Billy Bunter and Greedy Gregory remain with me. And then there are always old favourites from my children’s early years, all dog-eared and love-worn, evoking happy memor ies. Reading your piece on the Haunted Bookshop in Melbourne made me shiver. Some years ago, as part of an organised tour, I spent a little time in the Haunted Bookshop, and though I never caught a glimpse of the shop’s resident spirit, Donald, there was a real sense of a powerful, dark energy in the shop. And to anyone deciding to go on the ghost tour, my advice is that you should be prepare to be disturbed! Thanks for another super issue of gr. With Christmas now on the hor izon I’m flagging the best reads for my fellow, passionate bookwor ms.
