Good Reading : October 2016
GOOD READING OCTOBER 2016 9 audiobooks. Well, I’m putting my hand up. I’ve been listening to audiobooks for years, even though my main love is, and always will be, the printed book. I love listening to a book. I listen as I get dressed for work in the morning, while I’m ironing, sometimes when I go for a walk or sometimes while I’m driving. They are a great resource and allow me read when I normally wouldn’t be able to. I’ve even been known to switch one on as I’m cooking. The voice of the narrator is all-important: if I don’t click with the voice, I just can’t listen. My latest audiobook was Poirot and Me, written and read by actor David Suchet. I totally enjoyed listening to him talk about his 25 years of playing the little Belgian detective. Felicity Magill, Devonport Tas Dear gr As a lifelong lover of books, I am thrilled to be the parent of a voracious and advanced 13-year-old reader. I don’t say this with any smugness. This is a child who was slow to meet many developmental milestones, including speech, reading and writing, and who was subsequently diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. When I saw that he was struggling to learn to read, I sat with him every day, at home or in the back of the car dur ing family outings, and we slowly read the entire ‘Ben 10’ book set together, focusing on all the words, looking at the pictures and talking about the stor ies, which kept his interest as he loved Ben 10 at the time. There were tears of frustration but we persisted, eventually taking it in turns to read a paragraph, which led on to whole chapters. Slowly but surely we succeeded. Once he had learned to read, he rapidly became an avid reader and hasn’t looked back. The difficulty I have now is keeping up with his reading, which is where your magazine comes in. I scour it from front to back, looking for recommendations, such as books for younger readers based on age. My son has been given the option of an e-reader but he much prefers the paper version of books (thank goodness for free librar ies), and, as a result of his reading, he has acquired a broad general knowledge. Great job authors, Good Reading magazine and South Australian public librar ies.
