Good Reading : September 2016
GOOD READING SEPTEMBER 2016 9 Dear Rowena Reading Bob Moore’s letter (gr July 2016) in which he discusses audiobooks reminded me of a memorable meeting of my book group a few years ago. We were reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. One of the girls showed up with the audiobook version she had listened to. The book is narrated by Death, and there are textual cues in the printed version for when Death speaks, which obviously can’t be reproduced in the audio version. But the solution that the audiobook creators came up with was to express Death’s thoughts in a booming voice. It’s brilliant and added another layer to the story. We couldn’t get enough of it. It was one of our best meetings ever. The audiobook versions of Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, both of which are read by the author, are also worth mentioning. The author’s voice enr iches the story and transports you to Afghanistan. Some of the best audiobooks have multiple narrators for different chapters or characters. Audiobooks give you a little bit of the magic that you always get when someone reads to you. You never, ever get too old for that. Liane Barden, Charlestown NSW Dear Rowena I am reading two books that I’m enjoying. The first is Kissed by a Deer by Margi Gibb. The author’s father dies, and she accepts a job in Dharamsala in northern India. She is on a spiritual journey and eventually goes to Tibet. It’s an intimate account of her journey and the people she meets along the way. The second book is Stephen King’s memoir On Writing, which he wrote after he was hit by a van in 1999. He had six operations to save his life and mend his broken body. He has a great sense of humour. At the front of the book are two epigraphs: ‘Honesty’s the best policy.’ – Miguel de Cervantes ‘Liars prosper’ – Anon And from Kissed by a Deer: Attachment is the very opposite of love. Love says, ‘I want you to be happy’. Attachment says, ‘I want you to make me happy.’ – Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo Sheila Williamson, Beaconsfield W YOUR SAY EDITOR & PUBLISHER • Rowena Morcom email@example.com DEPUTY EDITOR • Tim Graham firstname.lastname@example.org EDITORIAL & TEAM ASSISTANT • Angus Dalton email@example.com ONLINE RESOURCES MANAGER Marian Barker firstname.lastname@example.org ADVERTISING MANAGER • Beth Parton email@example.com FINANCIAL DIRECTOR • David Morcom ART DIRECTOR • Danielle Cairis WORK/LIFE BALANCE SUPERVISOR Baxter the dog firstname.lastname@example.org PROOFREADER • Russell Thomson, AE ACCOUNTS ENQUIRIES email@example.com SUBSCRIPTIONS firstname.lastname@example.org Good Reading Magazine 14/7 Rosebery Place, Balmain NSW AUSTRALIA 2041 Tel: (61 2) 8090 1051 Fax: (61 2) 9810 2488 goodreadingmagazine.com.au ISSN 1445-2839 Subscription rates Print-only 12 months (11 issues) Australia $109.50 I New Zealand A$124.95 International A$205 Online-only 12 months (11 issues, single user) $70 Print and online 12 months (11 issues, single user) Aust $133 | NZ A$155 | International A$230 PUBLISHED BY Good Reading Magazine Pty Ltd ABN 38 003 750 150 14/7 Rosebery Place, Balmain NSW Australia 2041 goodreadingmagazine.com.au Tel: (61 2) 8090 1051 Copyright ©2016 Good Reading Magazine Pty Ltd All rights reserved.
