Out Angela May George Illustrated by Owen Swan I’m called an asylum seeker, but that’s not my name. This is the story of a little girl and her mother who have fled their homeland to live in a safe place. It’s narrated by the little girl, whose name we don’t know. In her short life she has already seen many horr ible things, listened to frightening night noises and hidden from men with guns. She has travelled with her mother to our country in a small boat; she sometimes wondered if she would ever see land again. Now she is here her life is so different: her mum has a job, there is enough food, and trips to the beach make her feel so free. But she misses her dad. Would he still be in the refugee camp? Then one day there’s a knock on the door. This story is beautifully told with Owen Swan’s soft evocative illustrations, which change from the dark colours of sadness to the brighter colours of happiness. It’s a perfect book to start a timely discussion with the young ones about what it would be like to be a refugee starting a new life in a new country. ★★★★ Scholastic $24.99 Reviewed by Merle Morcom Age guide 5+ GOODREADINGMAGAZINE.COM.AU GOOD READING AUGUST 2016 60 Pig the Winner Aaron Blabey Here’s another of those hilarious laugh-out-loud picture books starring Pig the Pug. As we all know, Pig always has to win, no matter what he’s doing. This time he challenges Trevor – his mild-mannered dachshund friend – to a race as to who can eat their supper faster. Pig’s mouth is like a great, gaping, cavernous hole, so he has no trouble stuffing in biscuits, kibble and three whopping big sausages and even all his doggie treats – all at once. If he’s not careful he’ll swallow the bowl! This pug never seems to learn those important life lessons. He’s contrite for a while, even allowing his friend to win now and then, but next time we read about him he’s just as bad as ever. But we can’t help loving him even though he’s ugly and greedy, and we can’t help laughing out loud when he gets himself into a pickle. ★★★★ Scholastic $16.99 Reviewed by Merle Morcom Age guide 3+ PICTURE BOOKS WOM word of mouth RATINGS ★ ★ ★★ ★★ ★★★ ★★★ ★★★★ ★★★★ ★★★★★ RG AUSTRALIAN AUTHOR AUSTRALIAN AUTHOR Age guide 5+ the Pug.
