Iwas in a lecture hall at the University of Western Sydney, Werrington, in a time so distant it had a ‘1’ in front of it, when my idle mind threw up the humble seed that would one day bloom into the glorious literary rose that I am now presenting to the world, if I may be allowed the odd flor id metaphor. My mind, it should be said, should not have been idle at that moment, given that I was at UWS to absorb the benefits of higher education. Sadly, in that Australian history course, I was absorbing very little. With my notebook out and looking for all the world like a genuinely eager student, I would listen closely to the lecturer’s tale until she related a histor ical fact that I could turn into a joke, at which point I would happily scribble down my little riff, which I could then proudly show to my fellow budding histor ians as evidence not only of my well-honed ability to treat my education with a complete lack of seriousness, but also of my mind-numbing boredom.
