Good Reading : June 2016
Hello Rowena How surprised I was to check the solutions to your ‘Dogs’ quiz (gr March 2016) and find that the answer to Question 7wasnotwhatIhad expected! The question was: ‘What were the names of the mother and father dogs in Dodie Smith’s 1956 children’s book The Hundred and One Dalmatians?’ Your answer was: ‘Perdita and Pongo’. I fear that you have inadvertently referred to the Disney version of this lovely story, not the original written by Dodie Smith. In the original, dogs Pongo and Missis were the parents of the Dearlys’ stolen puppies. Perdita was a dog found on the road by the Dearlys, not one of the original parents. She was a deprived mother all the same, as her pups had also been stolen in a separate incident. Mr Disney and his writers have a lot to answer for; too many children’s stories are adapted for film in a way that supposedly makes the movie more appealing. Bring back the originals, I say! And good on P L Travers, for sticking to her guns! Annette Bizzai, Gawler SA From Ed: Ouch! Yes, you are correct, Annette. Dear gr I’ve just read Gerald Murnane’s recently published memoir Something for the Pain (reviewed in gr March 2016) and have realised why the very best writers are the true alchemists. In 1974 Murnane published Tamarisk Row, his first novel, in which he transmuted potential dross – that is, growing up as the child of a compulsive gambler – into a gloriously and quintessentially Australian novel of country-town boyhood, in which the child’s unlikely vehicle of imaginative escape is the alternative world he creates around horseracing. Don’t think that a narrative about racing is not for you. This novel is about imagination, the strangeness and yet the utter commonality of being human. And Murnane writes like an angel to prove it.
