COFFEE TABLE GIBBS MAY May Gibbs once said that she could draw as soon as she could walk, and with parents who met at London’s famous Slade School of Art, it wasn’t surprising that May Gibbs would become an artist. Born in the UK in 1877, Cecilia May Gibbs went on to create iconic characters such as Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, the gumnut babies, and the ‘big bad’ Banksia Men. Even now, 147 years after her birth, her books are still in print, and when Princess Mary of Denmark gave birth to her first child in 2005, Australia gave her a first-edition 1918 copy of Tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. May Gibbs: More Than a Fairy Tale offers an intriguing peek into the early life of this beloved Australian icon. May Gibbs: More than a fairy tale by Robert Holden & Jane Brummitt is published by Hardie Grant, rrp $29.99. Underwater illustration - seahorse UNCOVERING THE MYSTERY OF Coloured Gumnut Baby poster.
