Good Reading : March 2016

words appear ing to be largely concerned with terror ism and economic, environmental and immigration problems. The picture in Australian English does not appear to be so grim. We have our own preoccupations. Every year I think that the dictionary has done everything it could to cover the lexicon of bushfires and bushfire prevention, and every year we have a few newcomers. This year it is bushfire shelter, the ready-made, freestanding building designed to withstand a fire passing over it, and cool burn, the procedure of burning off small patches to prevent bushfires reaching the intense heat that would threaten vegetation and wildlife. How we style ourselves is always a source of interest – and sometimes amusement. We now have the merman craze, with men colouring their hair and beards in light shades of blue, green and purple. The hipsters have beard gardens and beard baubles – little decorations to attach to their beards. In opposition to the hipsters, the lumbersexuals have arrived, kitted out in clothes that speak of the rugged outdoor life – big boots, check shirts, jeans, etc., combined with big beards. Those beards again. Women have taken to the alphabet creams – a line of creams identified as AA, BB, CC, DD and so on. There are probably more lining up on the shelves as I write, each one designed to treat and defeat a particular feminine skin problem. Life on the internet is another constant. This year we have the digital fingerprint and the digital tattoo, both indicators of the way in which our online activities can be identified and traced. People can be doxed, that is, have their personal documents released online for anyone to use as they wish. We have observed that there are sites for those with a particular obsession, who can share endless amounts of esoteric information about their chosen subject that fascinates the small group who inhabit the site but bores everyone else to tears. Their material is described as fancruft, cruft being an IT word for unnecessarily complicated coding in a piece of software.
