Good Reading : March 2016
GOOD READING MARCH 2016 9 is why I read it. This book also captured the soul of the protagonist, this time at the end of a young life. Please keep featur ing new books so that those of us who are often bewildered by the plethora of titles to choose from, in a library or bookshop, can seek out the diamonds. Unbecoming is a tricky title to remember, but the women in the story will remain with you. Fran Clayton, Woree Qld Dear Rowena After perusing other readers’ letters to you about their suggested ‘books to read before you die’ I couldn’t help but put in my two-cents’ worth, but I thought I might do so from the opposite angle. Here is my list of three books that I suggest you could give a miss to before you die. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. I know this is probably sacrilege, but I hated this book. My heart goes out to students forced to read it at school. Such a tale of woe filled with darkness and suffer ing. And miserable weather too. Twilight by Stephenie Myer. I had a suspicion that I wouldn’t like this book but I admit I got caught up in the hype. I did try very hard but it just made me cranky. Life is too short. I know – it’s my own fault for not trusting my instincts. Needless to say I never finished the ser ies. I know that my last book will cause a collective gasp as it is again a much-loved classic. It’s The Catcher in the Rye by J D Salinger. It could be that my expectations were too high when I began, but when reading it I found my mind wander ing all over the place, thinking about the day’s events and if I should put the washing on. It just never grabbed me. These are my thoughts only and I’m sure other gr readers will either be making effigies of me and sticking pins in them, or maybe, just maybe, some of them might agree. But I know for sure that they will also have a list of books to miss of their own. I would love to hear about them.
