gr’s top romance novels of 2015 Geoffrey Chaucer, creator of The Canterbury Tales, was one of the first authors to link St Valentine with romance. In his poem ‘The Parliament of Foules’, an assembly of birds have gathered to choose their mates. But Chaucer was probably wr iting about 3 May – the day of commemoration for St Valentine of Genoa – rather than 14 February.
