Good Reading : October 2015
GOODREADINGMAGAZINE.COM.AU GOOD READING OCTOBER 2015 60 Almost Sincerely Zoë Norton Lodge Zoë Norton Lodge grew up in Annandale, an inner-west suburb of Sydney, in the 1980s and ’90s. She lived there with her volatile Greek mamma, her chardy-loving dad and little sister, Georgia. She walks us through the old Annandale with its corner shop – that sells everything from ice-creams to tampons – to the house where 19th-century politician and businessman Sir Henry Parkes lived, the schoolroom where Mary MacKillop taught, the famous Beale Piano Factory and the Grand Old Abbey and the scary Witches’ Houses. We meet many of the quirky Annandale characters, the most memorable of whom is Phylly, their four-and-a -half-foot tall cleaner who fixes the ailing dishwasher by sprinkling it with holy water from the local Greek church. Zoë, from ABC TV’s consumer affairs program The Checkout, says in her opening chapter: ‘Here are some stories that might have happened to the people of Annandale, especially me.’ So maybe she is embellishing the facts just a little. But if she is, then it has only enhanced the enjoyment of these entertaining and laugh-out-loud stories. I love the way she writes. ★★★★ Giramondo $24.99 Reviewed by Merle Morcom WORDOFMOUTH Here in the non-fiction section of Word of Mouth you can read reviews of biographies, memoirs, travellers’ tales, historical events, food books, guides to living from philosophers, sociologists and everyday people – and more.
