Good Reading : September 2015
GOOD READING SEPTEMBER 2015 9 by that addictive fireplace. I hold Berkelouw’s responsible for lightening my purse and loading down the car. We have vowed next time we are in that neck of the woods that we will stop by to do it all over again. Keep up the good work. Jan Slade, Maribyrnong Vic Dear Rowena I read an article in The Canberra Times recently, which focused on our closest neighbour, Papua New Guinea. Anne-Sophie Her mann’s husband was high commissioner to Papua New Guinea from 2006 to 2009. During this time she discovered how little access children in PNG had to books. She said in this article: ‘I’d ask, “What kind of books do you have at home?” and they’d say, “We don’t have any books.” I thought that was strange, thinking the high commissioner’s staff would be middle class and would be able to afford books, but no. So I said, “Let’s go to the library,” and they said, “What’s that?” and I was like, “No, what? You don’t know what a public library is?”. And that was the start of it.’ Anne-Sophie then co-founded the Buk bilong Pikinini (books for children) foundation. It has since facilitated the opening of 17 libraries across PNG. Sadly most of the kids that visit a library have never seen a book before. The libraries also provide help with early childhood development and literacy programs. As well as educating the kids about books, they help to send positive messages about health. Recently kids learnt songs about how to fight diseases such as tuberculosis. Kudos to this ‘can do’ woman, who saw a problem and is trying to solve it, who saw a need and is working to fulfill it. And whose efforts will go on changing thousands of peoples lives for the better.
