GOOD READING FEBRUARY 2015 59 The Dark Art: My undercover life in global narco-terrorism Edward Follis & Douglas Century At a time when terror ist attacks and civil unrest in politically troubled countries dominate news stories, Amer ican undercover DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) agent Ed Follis’s memoir, The Dark Art, offers a deeper and more insidious perspective on drug-related organised crime linked to terrorist groups. Follis recounts his 27-year career, starting as a law enforcement street officer targeting drug traffickers in Los Angeles. From there he worked his way to global undercover work focusing on drug kingpins trafficking and supporting drug and ter ror ist global networks. Whether he worked in the US, Thailand, Hong Kong, or Afghanistan, Follis got close to the drug lords and their contacts. Learning the ropes from veteran agents, Follis prided himself on successfully creating strategies to infiltrate the drug world and bring those responsible to justice. This memoir is utterly compelling. I had to remind myself that Follis’s story is fact, as the action, danger and situations he experienced read like those in any good thriller. Follis tells his story with as much reverence for the kingpins he targeted as he does for his own accomplishments. It was a confrontational read, but it also provided insight into the intricacies of the fight between good and evil and the link between terrorism and drug trafficking. ★★★★ Scribe $32.99 Reviewed by Fotini Dangiris WORDOFMOUTH ★ Disappointing ★★ Worth a read ★★★ A good read ★★★★ Highly recommended ★★★★★ Outstanding RG Recommended for reading groups READ AN ONLINE EXTRACT WATCH A VIDEO DOWNLOAD A RECIPE DOWNLOAD TEACHERS’ NOTES DOWNLOAD BOOK CLUB NOTES Here in the non-fiction section of Word of Mouth you can read reviews of biographies, memoirs, travellers’ tales, historical events, food books, guides to living from philosophers, sociologists and everyday people – and more.
