GOODREADINGMAGAZINE.COM.AU GOOD READING FEBRUARY 2015 14 ME MY SHELF I Qantas pilot and keen reader ROBERT HATHERLY lives in Sydney. For two years in the late 1970s he lived in Africa. He is currently a captain on the Boeing 747-400, flying international routes to Asia, Africa and the Americas. His favourite trip is the so-called kangaroo route to London via the main Asian cities of Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong. Here he tells us about the books he loves to read, whether he’s at home or in an exotic destination. What are you reading now? Salt: A world history by Mark Kurlansky. My wife bought it at a secondhand bookshop thinking I might like it. It’s a fascinating book about the history of salt and its importance in civilisation throughout the centur ies. I’ve always been interested in the different types of salts from around the world. What are some of your favourite books and authors? Is there enough space for this answer? 1. Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defence of Food. 2. All of Bill Bryson’s books. 3. Anything by Niall Ferguson, in particular The Ascent of Money (which is based on a popular TV series). 4. Alain de Botton’s books, such as The Art of Travel. 5. The writings of Patrick Leigh Fermor. 6. Chris Harrison’s Head Over Heel. 7 . When a Crocodile Eats the Sun by Peter Godwin. Which books have made you laugh out out loud? Harpo Speaks!, a biography of Harpo Marx by Harpo Marx with Rowland Barber, was very entertaining. Which books have moved you? Berlin: The Downfall 1945 by Antony Beevor. I bought this book after travelling to Germany and seeing the memorials to the Holocaust and other historical places. I didn’t study history at school and this book gave me a greater insight and understanding of what fascinating book about the history of salt and Berlin: The Downfall 1945 by Antony Beevor.
